In 1534, Henry the Eighth passed his "Act of Supremacy", breaking with the Catholic Church and giving rise to the Church of England, with himself as its sumpreme leader. Whilst still a devout Catholic, Henry sought to remove from Catholicism the papacy and ritual of Rome. He became one of the first Catholics to stand against the Church, and so became a pioneer in the Catholic revolution.

Similarly, today's Neo-Catholic movement seeks to develop and expand upon traditionally held Catholic beliefs, based on an increased understanding of Christianity and the nature of the universe which has arisen in recent times.
